Web-Based Information Systems

Learning Outcome:

After successfully completing this learning you will be able to diagnose inefficient business processes and propose information system improvements.

Why should I do this?

When you need to improve the performance of business systems to reduce operating costs.

How will I know when I've succeeded?

You will troubleshoot a core business process and document a set of information system improvements.

Learning Objectives in the 'Mandatory Objectives' column refer to the bare minimum you need to learn to pass. It is essential that this learning is undertaken.

Successful completion of the 'Honours' column, together with the 'Mandatory Objectives' column, will prepare you more thoroughly.

If you complete all of the learning in each column, then you will be in the best position to obtain a high mark during the assessments.

For each category, click on individual Learning Objectives to access the relevant learning material.

Mandatory Objectives: Honours: First Class:
How do I analyse and document an existing business process using the Unified Modelling Language (UML)? What other modelling notations such as IDEF0 and SSADM can be used to model business processes? When do I use problem-solving techniques such as Ishikawa (fish-bone) diagrams, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Statistical Process Control (SPC)?
How do I revise and amend a process to meet business goals? How do I manage the exploration of ideas for process improvement? How might an organisation's employees react to the introduction of new business processes?
What is the business value of information systems? How can I make better use of existing information facilities? How can I integrate paper-based systems with electronic information systems?
How do I identify critical business processes? How do I manage the documentation of business patterns? How do other organisations manage their business processes?
What tools am I likely to use? Are there any relevant references?
