Writing - Instructions for Parents

[ Question Paper ]

Children should choose one title to write about. The exercise should be completed in 60 minutes. Use a maximum of 15min.for planning and 45min. for writing.

Give your child a piece of paper to plan and write the story. Tell them the titles and talk about the one they choose. There are two types of writing - story or information. Many children choose to write a story but they should be encouraged to tackle other types of writing as well.

Story
These are the things children should think about when writing a story: -

  1. Setting: where and when did the story take place?
  2. Characters: who are the people in the story? What are they like?
  3. How does the story begin?
  4. What happens in the middle of the story?
  5. How does the story end?
  6. Using interesting words and phrases.
  7. Spelling
Information Writing
These are the things children should think about when putting together a piece of informative writing.
  1. The facts that need to be included.
  2. The type of article they are writing - is it a letter, a newspaper item, an opinion?
  3. Putting together a clear, well-thought out argument or discussion
  4. How does the item begin and end?
  5. Using interesting and appropriate words and phrases.
  6. Spelling
In a SATs test children only have to do one piece of writing. To help them prepare for the SATs you might ask them to do this exercise two or three times, choosing a different title each time.
