A child's school career is divided into Key Stages. A Key Stage lasts for two or more years. At each Key Stage, children work towards an appropriate level in all subjects for their age and ability. These levels are described in the National Curriculum Orders published by the DfEE.

Key Stage School Years
1 1/2
2 3/4/5/6
3 7/8/9
4 10/11

Pupils are given written tests, called SATs, towards the end of Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 to assess the level they have achieved in Maths, English and Science. SATs are national tests set by government agencies.

At the end of Key Stage 4, pupils take GCSE exams set by external exam boards (these are not SATs tests).
