How to Help Your Child

Writing - Instructions for Parents

[ Question Paper ]

Children should choose one title to write about.

Help your child to plan the story. Look at all the titles and talk about them together before they choose which one they want to write about. There are two types of writing - story or information. Many children choose to write a story but they should be encouraged to tackle other types of writing as well.

Story
These are the things children should think about when writing a story: -

  1. Where and when does the story take place?
  2. Who are the people in the story? What are they like?
  3. How does the story begin?
  4. What happens in the middle of the story?
  5. How does the story end?
  6. Using interesting words and phrases.
  7. Spelling
Information Writing
These are the things children should think about when putting together a piece of informative writing.
  1. The facts that need to be included.
  2. How to present their writing, (look at letters and invitation to see how they are set out).
  3. Using interesting and appropriate words and phrases.
  4. Spelling
In a SATs test children only have to do one piece of writing. To help them prepare for the SATs you might ask them to do this exercise two or three times, choosing a different title each time.
