How to Help Your Child

Poetry

Read the poem, then answer the question. The poem reminds us that acts of friendship are important, to the giver and the receiver.
Someone to Care

All alone the old woman sat
Wrapped in her blanket, her shield against the cold.
She could hardly hear
She could hardly see
Who would care for her now she was old?

In a crowded room, the young man sat
Wrapped in a blanket of people, alone on his chair.
He could hardly hear
He could hardly see
Who would know he needed someone to care?

In a busy room, a young woman sat
Wrapped in a blanket of letters, so much to read, so much to do.
She wanted to help
She desperately cared
For those less fortunate than herself.

In the old woman's room, in the young man's home
Wrapped in a blanket of talk and laughter
She reached out her hand
She offered a gift
They could tell that she cared - as she offered her time and herself.

number1 How does the poem suggest that the young woman changed the lives of the young man and the old woman?

Think about:
The needs of the old woman and the young man
The 'gift' offered by the young woman
The effect that the young woman had on the lives of the two people during the time that she visited and afterwards
