All pupils at Key Stage 2 who are assessed as level 3 or above, are given the same written tests in Maths. The Maths SATs include a mental arithmetic test and two other longer tests. Mental Arithmetic The mental arithmetic test is a taped test lasting about 20 minutes. Questions on the tape are played to the children. The tapes are pre-recorded and sent to the school. They are designed to make the test as fair and unbiased as possible. Tests A & B The other two tests, (Test A and Test B) last 45 minutes each and cover a range of maths work including number, shape, space, measurement, money, weight, time, probability, problem solving and graphs and grids. The tests use mathematical language that pupils have encountered during their lessons. Test A is a non-calculator paper but calculators are allowed in Test B, and there are questions that test whether pupils can use a calculator. Very able pupils may take a Maths Extension paper to see if they can achieve Level 6. This is a 30-minute test and the questions are based on work that is covered by pupils who have moved on to Key Stage 3 work.
