The written Maths test at Key Stage 1 covers number, shape, space, measurement, money, weight and time.

Pupils are given questions that involve mental arithmetic, number work, problem solving, simple charts, simple graphs and comparisons. The language used in the test is appropriate for this age group who are working at levels 2 - 3.

Pupils at level 1 take a more practical Maths test with the class teacher. The teacher asks relevant questions as she works with the pupil to assess his ability. If appropriate, the pupil may still go on to take the written test.

Very able pupils may take an extra paper to see if they can achieve level 4.
