Reading

Pupils, assessed by the teacher at level 1 or 2, are tested individually, choosing one book from a given selection. Each school is provided with the same set of books for the reading test. The pupil reads a short passage from the book to the teacher and marks are given for reading ability. The teacher asks the pupils a few questions to check his understanding. The pupil might be asked to predict what might happen in the story. Marks are given for the pupil's ability to talk about the book and answer the questions competently.

Written tests

Pupils who are working beyond level 1 take written tests:

  • Reading Comprehension test
Pupils are given a booklet containing a short story, a poem or piece of writing and are asked to answer questions about what they have read. This tests their understanding and their ability to write clearly in simple sentences. There are different comprehension booklets for levels 2 and 3. Pupils who are successful at level 2 may go on to take the level 3 test.

  • Writing task
All pupils are asked to write a story, a poem or a piece of writing. Marks are given for ideas, use of interesting words, and presentation. Children are encouraged to use proper sentences, with full stops and capital letters where appropriate. They should also show some understanding of simple grammar.

Spelling
Pupils are given a short spelling test in a booklet containing a mixture of spelling activities. Pupils at level 1 may be given an oral spelling test.

Very able pupils may take an extra paper to see if they can achieve level 4.

Letter from Paul

Dear Sue,

It is _(nice)_ here. We are staying in a big _(hotel)_ near the sea. I am enjoying my __(holiday)__.

This __(morning)__ we went for a walk. We went down the __(path)__ to the beach. Mum let me take some __(pictures)__ with her camera. I said, "Can you all __(smile)__ please?"

I can't __(wait)__ wait to see them. I think one will be very funny __(because)__ Dad got soaked by a big wave. It made him __(laugh)__.

Then we met our new __(friends)__ and played football. My __(team)__ lost by two goals. Afterwards, I collected shells in my __(bucket)__. See you soon.

Love from Paul
