Books and Videos

At any good bookstore you will find several books and videos about learning to swim. The Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) also provides various publications directly to pools and clubs about aspects its work and the world of swimming. However, the best way to learn is through an approved swimming coach at your local pool.

On-line, an American web site Swim Info at http://www.swiminfo.com/, sponsored by Swimming World Magazine and SWIM Magazine has a magazine format and provides news, information and training advice.

Swimming Clubs and Pools

pic23Clubs
There are clubs based at most swimming pools. They vary in size but all of them have approved coaching staff. Almost all of the 1700 clubs throughout the UK are registered with the ASA. Each club's committee sets fees and charges. Generally you pay an annual membership fee and a fixed amount each time you train or swim. Every club has club galas, inter club competitions with other clubs and social events for its members. Clubs that register their members with the ASA can send swimmers to County, Regional or National Competitions providing they reach the approved qualifying time.

Some clubs are starting to use the Internet to supply information. Check out the Clubs and Teams at http://www.yahoo.co.uk/Regional/Countries/United_Kingdom/

Pools
If you don't want to join a club, you can still swim at a pool at most of the open swimming sessions. Occasionally, there are special times set aside for 'lane' swimming. During these times, the swimming pool is divided into several lanes, separated by ropes. Lane sessions are for swimmers only, so that they can swim without being disturbed by non-swimmers or people who just want to have a fun session. Most pools offer lessons to non-swimmers or swimmers who want to improve. Ask at the pool's information desk for details.

The Amateur Swimming Association

pic24 The Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) is the National Governing body for Swimming, Diving, Water Polo and Synchronised Swimming in England. It has many responsibilities including:
  • organising competitions throughout the country through its network of regional and county committees
  • establishing and upholding the laws for those sports it represents
  • supporting and running the UK national teams
  • operating an award programme for teachers, coaches and officials
  • operating an award scheme that encourages swimmers to work towards certificates and badges at all levels. (You can try for these at a swimming club, during your school swimming sessions or with a registered swimming teacher).

More than 1700 swimming clubs are affiliated to the ASA through a district and county structure. The five districts include the Midlands, Northern Counties, North Eastern Counties, Southern Counties and Western Counties.

The ASA Head Office is at Harold Fern House, Derby Square, Loughborough, Leics. Tel. 01509 230431.

Sport Shops

Good sport shops stock a wide range of swimwear and swimming accessories. They are happy to give advice about what you need. Some larger leisure centres also stock sports gear and will offer good advice about all their sportswear and equipment.
