Recovery is often said to be even more important than training. This may seem an outrageous comment, however it is known that you don't get fit or stronger when you train, you get fitter and stronger as you recover.

Recovery time is when your body produces the adaptations that training has stimulated e.g. growing muscle, improving nervous system co-ordination to enhance speed improvements, or producing more efficient enzymes to enhance anaerobic performance.

You can therefore significantly change how quickly or slowly you recover and adapt from training by implementing various principles and methods to speed up the recovery process.
