Project BackgroundojOutline

History

pre- 2000

2 distinct first year 'quants' and IT modules - each taught totally separately

charged with the challenge of engaging Business students with the data analysis and IT which they needed for a career in business.

decided at the outset to integrate the 'quants' and IT into a "Business Analysis" module

but needed a vehicle to drive the student engagement

had the idea to develop new Business Analysis module supported by a replica company

the replica chosen from a number of other possibilities including using a real company

decided to use a retail company due to familiarity of students to context

2000-2004

developed a version of "the business" for the start of the delivery of the new module in 2000-2001

seemed to be working quite well as far as we could tell from the student feedback but we were aware that the resources were rather 'clunky'

2005

Bid for FDTL5 project funding to enable further integration across curriculum through a broader resource (including "the business")

FDTL5 funding awarded

The initial project plan had three strands to it:

  • a widening of the scope of the integration across the business curriculum
  • an investigation of the triggers which spark student engagement
  • and, hence, a re-work of the replica

We were at this time approaching revalidation of the business programmes which potentially gave us an opportunity to explore the practicalities of embedding the resource within the programme framework

This did not happen - the strength of subject boundaries proved too strong and we decided in the end that it would be more effective to evangelise and draw in the converted rather than try to impose to resource on the unconvinced.
