The media in sport can be divide into two categories:
1. the written word - e.g. newspapaers, magazines and books
2. broadcasting - e.g. radio, television and films
The written word
Todays sport is written about extensively. Newspapers back pages are coveredwith sporting features. Sports are reported, discussed and commented on. The range of sports events covered varies from paper to paper with some covering football and racing in the winter and cricket and racing in the summer. Local and regional papersoften report matches with a local bias. There are also many book spublished on sport covering a wide range of topics from educational texts to autobiographies of professional sports people.
Broadcasting
The development of radio brought a wider, different audience to sport although television has had a much bigger impact. Spectatorism began to decrease as coverage of more sports on television increased. To help them offset the the loss of income from the decrease in spectatorism and so still gaining an income, sports started to sell themselves to television companies. The increased popularity that a sport gains from television coverage provides two further spin offs. The first being that a strong television following attracts better advertising and increased levels of sponsorship and secondly, television coverage along with magazine articles have helped promote some sports men and women into stars.
