Cool-down

The importance of cooling down is often overlooked. However cooling down is important for recovery. Below are tables corresponding to muscular and cardio-vascular activity.

Muscular
Implication Explanation
Prevention of muscle damage Allows the muscle to cool down slowly not suddenly
Good time for flexibility work Muscle is already warm and elastic


Cardio-vascular
Implication Explanation
Removal of lactic acid Increased blood flow helps metabolise lactic acid
Removal of CO2 Increase blood flow helps to remove the CO2 via the lungs
Prevention of blood pooling Maintains venous return by the action of the muscle pump
