'Listening skills are considered fundamental to the nursing role' (Worobey and Cummings 1994). There is evidence to suggest that compliance improves as well as satisfaction when listening skills are well utilised (Davis et al 2008).
I witnessed effective listening skills on my last placement in a cardiac clinic at a local hospital where I saw a smoking cessation advisor really boost a patient's confidence and motivate them to try to stop smoking really just by asking questions, listening carefully and responding appropriately.
