Penny reflectingPenny's Reflection

Student Nurse

It was a really good discussion, I could see that Chris was personalising what he said and didn’t just say a lot of information, he really listened. Mr Phillips started off a bit ‘not sure why I’m here’ and ended up going to try and stop smoking. Which was really positive, it was great to see a health professional having such a positive effect.

I was surprised to hear about how his smoking caused so much family upset, I realised as he spoke that the impact of this habit extended much further than Mr Phillips heart and lungs, his family had all sorts of anxieties and concerns relating to his health.

Part of Chris’s effectiveness was his ability to connect with him and listen to his side of things and then when it came to it, he also really knew his stuff about the medication and how to get it and to take it.

From seeing this I realise that I need to understand smoking cessation and issues in addiction a little better and to think about strategies to open up discussion about these kinds of things, starting up the conversation is the hardest bit I think. It might be useful for me to read about emotional and family issues not just the drug advice etc as these seem to have an impact on whether people want to stop or can stop, it would be good to see how exactly.
