This was resolved by exploring the issues of sexual and personal safety, individually with Emma and then discussing ways in which her mother could support her. This proved to be very constructive in providing a forum for positive communication between Emma and her mother, which was one of the indentified goals they had set together.
I informed Emma that this information had to be passed onto the police as she and other young girls could be at risk. Our relationship did change at this point as she did not want me to take this information any further and she began to disengage for a while. After more explanation around the risks posed to her and work from her ‘Safe at Last’ key worker, Emma began to realise the dangers she could face. She then started to reengage in the work with myself and her family. Emma also wanted me to support her in talking these issues through with her mother, who was understandably very scared for her safety and well –being.
I found this part of the practice very challenging as I had two roles within this family, which did conflict with the work at the time. The family session did get ‘put on hold’ while the task of risk management took over.
