Due to my regular visits, I quickly built up a good working relationship with Emma and her family. This was evident by the way they communicated with me as they became more open about their presenting problems and became more comfortable in disclosing personal issues. As a result of the context of the sessions it was important to maintain trust between myself and the family ensuring the they can share information with me in confidence which Parrott (2006) suggests secures a more effective practice. However I made the family aware that confidentiality is not absolute, meaning that if something was disclosed regarding the safety of another person I have a duty to act upon this information. This did become an issue as during my work with the Emma it was disclosed she was at risk of sexual exploitation from an older male. I was aware she was a sexually active young girl but during the one-to-one sessions with Emma it became clear this older male was placing her at risk. He was taking her to his house which he shared with several other males and other young girls were also involved with this male.

Emma feeling 'pushed out of the way'Part of the work I facilitated with the family was ‘life line’ work. This was where Emma ‘mapped’ out significant events in her life with the help of her mother. The idea behind this work is to think about the significant events and talk about their meaning. This work produced a significant development in the families’ relationship as it was discovered the birth of Emma’s half sister was the moment she felt disconnected from the family as she believed that she was ‘pushed out of the way’. In particular there is evidence to support that children and adolescents in step-families are at increase risk of various mental health problems such as depression and negative self image (Sweeney and Bracken: 2000 and Foley et al: 2004).
