It may have been as a result in your change of behaviour, actions or applying new knowledge and skills you have learnt. Reflecting regularly will help you to develop your skills. When you look back through your reflections you will be able to identify your progress, what is going well and what areas you need to work on. You can then set and review objectives in your action plan that identify how you are going to achieve your personal and professional development.

If you are required to reflect on experiences as part of an assessment e.g. written assignment, you need to be very clear on the content and format your lecturer expects. If you are clear at the beginning of the module you will then be able to manage your time effectively and reflect on experiences that are relevant to your learning and help you achieve the module learning outcomes. Try and reflect little and often, choosing a way that suits you personally. Some people like to write, type, draw or record their reflections. You will then have a useful resource to return to when you write your assignment.

PennyDear Editor,
I find it hard to find the time to reflect and ensure what I do reflect on is useful to me, to my development and my assessed work. Can you offer me any advice please? Penny, Student

A

Dear Penny,
It's good that you recognise reflection is a useful tool for learning.  Reflection is used in the Personal Development Planning process which provides a structure that helps you plan your personal and professional development effectively for your future employability. You can write about a number of things related to your studies. These can include your feelings about your course e.g. any personal achievements, challenges, and difficulties, how you learn best, ideas arising from your studies, observations and what you're finding out about yourself and others.  Students often think the experience they are reflecting on has to be a negative one.The experience may be one in which you have achieved a positive outcome and you are reflecting on why.
