What is Food Awareness Week?
Food Awareness Week is a new event for 1998, promoted by the British Dietetic Association. It encourages everybody to eat more fruit and vegetables - at least five portions of fruit and veg every day. The theme of the week is 'Give Me 5'.
Five Good reasons to Eat More Fruit and Vegetables
- They taste great and add colour, flavour and texture to meals and snacks
- They're full of vitamins and minerals for good health
- They help protect you against disease
- They provide the dietary fibre your body needs
- They are low in fat and calories
Getting the Message Across
State Registered Dieticians are working locally with community groups, schools, work places, cafes and restaurants. They give reliable, independent and practical information about food and health.
The British Dietetic Asociation publish fact sheets, posters, stickers and activity ideas. These cover all the benefits of eating fruit and vegetables and give advice about buying, storing, preparing and cooking these foods.
