Who they are and what they do

- based in school and the first line of contact for careers advice
- works closely with other school staff to provide careers education and guidance to all pupils through timetabled lessons, PSE work and national curriculum subject areas
- establishes school-industry links
- coordinates work-experience programmes, industry days and careers evenings
For pupils, the teacher:
- offers information about possible career pathways
- provides activities that encourage self-awareness in relation to career choices
- offers support by showing interest, guidance and opportunities for discussion
- encourages further research by providing resources
Careers Adviser
- based with local Careers Advisory service but has close working links with individual schools
- works closely with school staff to provide a comprehensive careers education for all from Key Stage 3
- supplies advice and guidance on all aspects of the careers education programme
- provides practical help for work-related activities such as work-experience and careers conventions
For pupils, the career adviser:
- provides confidential advice about career choices through individual interviews
- looks at different training or further education options
- advises on the preparation of personal action plans
- provides continuing support beyond post-16 options
- based with local Employment Service but has close working links with careers service and individual schools
- works closely with career and school staff to provide information and advice relating to all aspects of post-16 training and employment
For pupils, the EIA:
- provides information about vacancies and training opportunities
- arranges interviews and helps pupils prepare for them
- many work closely with individual schools to promote school-industry links.
- will attend school careers evenings or careers conventions
- will invite groups of pupils to the work place
For the pupils, employers:
- provide work experience placements
- attend careers evenings or conventions to provide information
- provide a practical insight into the world of work
- help with mini-enterprise schemes
- major influence on a young person's ideas about their future
- have the opportunity to become partners in the guidance process by attending careers evenings
- are encouraged to be involved in considering their son/daughter's choices
Parents/Guardians/family can help by:
- being a sounding board for their children
- giving support, encouragement and guidance
- showing an interest
- respecting the choices of their children
