All pupils have to study the three core subjects
  • English
  • Maths
  • Science (single, dual or triple)

and their school timetable must also include

  • a Modern Foreign Language
  • Technology (design and technology/ information technology)
  • PE
  • RE
cog_bultOption choices
Option choices for subjects leading to GCSE are selected from the foundation subjects. Pupils are allowed to select three or four subjects depending on the school's policy. The choices include
  • History
  • Geography
  • an additional Modern Language
  • Art
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Dual Science (a combination of the three sciences)
  • Triple Science (three separate sciences of biology, physics and chemistry)
  • Religious Education
  • Latin
The government believes that dual or triple science should be taken by the great majority of pupils and that single science is intended for a minority of pupils who have good reason to spend more time on other subjects.
