Linking subject options to career possibilities

Pupils may decide to link their option choices to possible careers though many young people are undecided at this stage about what they want to do after school.

Where can subjects choices lead?

There are many routes and pathways to individual careers. Subject choices are the starting point. Very few careers depend on knowledge of only one subject. Most need a broad range of knowledge and skills from several subject areas. However, skills, techniques or knowledge gained from certain subjects are a useful foundation.

How important are individual subject choices?
Individual subject choices are like stepping stones. They join together to form a career pathway. Every aspect of each subjects points towards a variety of career options.

These are just a few suggestions to show how one aspect of a particular subject can lead to a range of job opportunities

Languages
skill: ability to speak, read and write another language
career possibilities: diplomat, secretary, travel agent, (or the possibility to live and work in another country)

Art
technique: working with materials
career possibilities: artist, joiner, potter, jeweller, designer

Design and Technology
skill: using equipment
career possibilities: photographer, computer programmer, engineer, technician

Art & Design
skill: creative imagination and ability
career possibilities: architect, designer, beautician, window dresser

Business Studies
knowledge: how businesses work
career possibilities: manager, shopkeeper, sales representative

Economics
knowledge: finance
career possibilities: accountant, bank manager, clerk

Computer Studies
skill/technique: working with computers and developing computer skills
career possibilities: software engineer, designer/programmer, typist, receptionist

Geography
knowledge: the environment
career possibilities: farmer, ecologist, countryside warden, town and country planner

History
knowledge: the past
career possibilities: museum assistant, tourist guide, antique dealer, teacher

RE
technique: comparing values and beliefs
career possibilities: social worker, welfare officer, minister, youth worker

Performing Arts
skill: performing
career possibilities: actor, dancer, musician, teacher

Physical Education
skill: in a variety of sports
career possibilities: fitness instructor, sports teacher, youth worker, leisure centre assistant

Science
knowledge: physics
career possibilities: technician, engineer, mechanic, electrician
