You are also welcome to visit us in person and make use of facilities in any campus learning centre. How do I use the service? If you are on a Distance Learning course please contact the Distance Learner Support Service direct. How quickly do you respond to enquiries? We aim to deal with enquiries promptly and keep you informed of developments. Our turnaround target is five working days, although we often satisfy requests quicker than this. Some material can take longer to obtain so it is wise to allow plenty of time. How do I get information? You can use the Catalogue to search our collection http://catalogue.shu.ac.uk. You can access a wide range of electronic information databases via LitSearch which can be found on the Catalogue. Further information on the DLSS is in the student portal ( http://my.shu.ac.uk / Learning Support tab / Library and Information Services channel). How can I improve my information see arching skills? InfoQuest is a self-paced tutorial to help you develop information skills. It is embedded within many courses or you can self-enrol on a generic version via the Key Skills channel on the Learning Support tab in the Student portal. How do I borrow books? We will post you books from reading lists, or those needed for research, subject to availability. Contact us with your requirements and we will send them by registered mail without charge. You are responsible for returning books and we recommend that you use a secure and traceable method. Books in the One Week loan category may be borrowed for an initial period of three weeks. You may have up to 15 books on loan at one time. Some books are not available for loan but we can supply copies of parts of these books. Books that we do not stock can be obtained from other libraries. This usually takes at least two weeks. We are not able to send books outside the UK and Ireland. We can supply photocopies of parts of books to overseas distance learners. How do I renew books? To avoid fines, it is important to renew or return books on or before the date they are due back. If they are not required by another student, books may be renewed for one week. Books can be renewed up to ten times before they should be returned. Books may be renewed by
How do I get journal articles Through the Catalogue you have access to a wide range of electronic information sources. We will also photocopy journal articles to post or fax to Distance Learners who are unable to access the information electronically (within limits prescribed by Copyright legislation). Copyright law, requires that each article requested must be accompanied by a fully completed and signed Copyright declaration form. Forms are available from the DLSS pages in the student portal ( http://my.shu.ac.uk / Learning Support tab /Library and Information Services channel) or may be provided by e-mail. A fee of £1.00 will be charged for each photocopy supplied. Please be selective when requesting photocopies of journal articles. Articles from journals that we do not stock can be obtained from other libraries. This usually takes a minimum of two weeks. Can I access libraries near my home or work? The DLSS encourages distance learners to use public or academic library services nearer to where they live. Distance Learners are eligible for the UK Libraries Plus reciprocal borrowing scheme.
