The chair of the meeting was very good in asking for the mothers opinion on issues but failed to engage with Emma. I made a point of referring the same questions at Emma so she could give her views. I explained things in a manner that they could understand and was not threatening. This demonstrated my ability to meet Key Role 3 of the National Occupational Standards for social workers: support individuals to represent their needs, views and circumstances.
This statement has made me challenge my own values as I had thought of myself as a worker who does treat services users as equal. However reflecting on Banks' theory, workers need to allow service users to have equal opportunities but this will involve working in different ways depending on the oppressed group and their individual situation.
During the final strategy meeting I participated in, both Emma and her mother was invited. I thought this was a good idea as I believe they needed to hear what was being discussed and allow them to input in their own support packages. Before the meeting I explained to them what the meeting was for and what would be discussed in order to prepare them, as they were both a little apprehensive. I also informed them who would be attending the meeting, including my own practice teacher as she would be observing my practice and did not want them to think they were going to be observed ( I have included my direct observation by my practice in appendix 1). During this meeting I sat next to Emma to support her in voicing her own opinions, in which I had supported her to write down prior to the meeting.
