Jenny also used her ward round experience to reflect on her role as a patient advocate. >>>

Reflection - The nurse as an advocate

JennyJames was unable to speak to the doctor about his concerns as he was about to be discharged and at the time I 'sided' with James as a consequence of my liking for him and really felt quite angry with the doctor for his insensitive behaviour. This meant that I didn't fully consider my team role.

Initially I wished I'd intervened with the doctor, but given my interruption of his dialogue along with my own irritation (that I might not have been able to hide) at feeling as if I had to step in to support the patient, it could have easily resulted in a tetchy exchange between us that further undermined James ability or willingness to speak and share his anxieties, or even affect the doctor to the point where he's unable to deal with James effectively either.
