Most of us think about experiences afterwards. We may wish to re-live something enjoyable or we may be concerned about something.

"We won the game today because..."

"I wish I hadn't done..."

"What if..."

"Next time..."

We may reflect immediately after an experience or later, when something triggers a memory.

We all reflect naturally with friends or on our own but not necessarily in a critical or analytical way that deliberately sets out to promote development and change.

Reflection

Thinking about something, reflecting, helps to make sense of it and 'categorize' it so that learning from the experience can be used again.

We may not automatically do this, and this is why reflecting is not just something we do all the time in an effective way. Without reflection we may go on doing something ineffectively, never stopping to consider what works, what doesn't and how to do it differently.
