Rhyming Words

penny_rPenny Phoniic says -
' Read these words and listen to the sounds at the end of the words.'

should could would wood good hood
stood flood blood mud bud thud

They all end in an 'ud' sound, even though their spellings are different.

When words end with the same sound we say they are rhyming words.

We often use rhyming words in a poem.

Here is a poem using some 'ud' rhyming words.

There was a young man called Hood
Who was honest and kind and good.
He lived in a tree,
And then he could see
The people who entered the wood.

Word Mouse

Think of some rhymes for 'down'

Now try to complete this poem so that it rhymes. Use the same rhyming pattern as the 'Hood' poem.

There was a young boy from Clowne
Who ran all the way into _________
When he got there
He did nothing but __________
For the houses were all upside____________!

penny_rPenny Phonic says 'This type of poem is called a limerick. Most limericks are nonsense poems and many of them are funny. Have a go at making up one of your own!'
