Click to go to top of the pageQ. Where can I learn to play hockey?

A. You usually learn to play through your school. If you are keen on the game then you can join a club. Some clubs can be contacted via their web page [See Information: Organisations and Links] but if you cannot find a club near you, contact one of the national organisations for help.

Click to go to top of the pageQ. What's a 'bully'?

A. A bully is a set piece used to restart the game. [See On the Field: Set Pieces ]

Click to go to top of the pageQ. Is hockey played by boys as well as girls?

A.Yes. There are men's and women's teams as well as junior teams at all levels. [See Getting Started: Competitive Hockey]

Click to go to top of the pageQ. Is it a physical sport?

A. You do need to be physically fit to play because it is a fast moving game. You also need to be mentally alert so you are aware of the tactical moves. It is a non-contact game but sometimes there are injuries when players are hit by a fast-moving ball or a raised stick. The goalkeeper who is directly in the 'firing line' is well padded for protection. [See Getting Started: Goalkeeping Equipment]

Click to go to top of the pageQ. What age do you have to be to play in a team?

A. Mini-hockey with shorter, lighter sticks and a smaller ball has been devised for players as young as eight. A full 11-a-side game is usually played by those aged 12 and over.

Click to go to top of the pageQ. Is the equipment expensive?

A. The cost of sticks and boots varies and obviously the better quality equipment costs more. When buying, choose a stick that suits your height and age. As you get older, you can handle a heavier, longer stick. [See Getting Started]

Click to go to top of the pageQ. What skills do you need to play the game?

A. Good ball control, sure footwork and the ability to move with the ball and to pass or receive the ball are the basic skills. As your confidence grows you will learn how to tackle and if you are in a scoring position, you need to know how to shoot! [See On the Field: Skills]
