Getting ready
for college

Living away
  • I want to go to college.
  • I know what I want to study.
  • My application has been successful.

Living at home

There are many advantages to living at home while you are studying but you need to be aware of the difficulties and have some ways of dealing with them.

Plus points

  • You know the area
  • You have friends locally
  • You don't have the upheaval of moving all your belongings somewhere else
  • You have the support of your family
  • It is usually cheaper than living independently

    Minus points

    • You do not feel independent
    • Your social life is restricted
    • There are tensions and disagreements over 'house rules'
    • You are more financially dependent on your parents

It is probably more natural to stay at home until you are 18 or 19, but then you may want to spread your wings and look for a study place further afield.
