Things to think about before you go to college

Money

  • Course Fees - how much are they and who pays them?
(Most FE courses for the 16 - 18 age group are free. After 18, you or your parents may need to contribute something towards your fees. Ask the college or university what their fees are, then ask the Local Education Authority if you get a grant towards them).

  • Am I entitled to a student grant or a Student Loan?
(The rules about these change each year. See the student web page 'Money and Surviving' listed in the Resources section for up-to-date information).

Working

  • Can I get a part-time job?
(Many students do work part-time during term and full-time during the holidays. Some Student Unions will help you find a job locally).

Somewhere to live

  • If I move to a new town, how can I find somewhere to live?
(Universities and colleges of HE have accommodation officers who can help you find somewhere to live. They may suggest you live in university accommodation during your first year. Some FE colleges will help you find somewhere if you are new to the area.)

Getting around

  • I can't afford to pay bus and train fares!
(Buy a student rail or coach card to cut down on travel expenses. For a one-off annual fee of around £20, you get a student rail card giving you 34% off all British Rail fares. A National Express Student Coach Card costs around £10 for the year and gives you 30% off all fares. Check with BR and National Coaches for their latest charges).
