 British Ice Hockey Association
The sport is governed by the British Ice Hockey Association, founded over sixty years ago. There are more than forty-five clubs in Great Britain with over 8,000 players. Leagues are run at several levels for men, women and juniors. |
Leagues
The season runs from September to March and teams play each other, within their league, home and away. Two points are awarded for a win and one point for a tied match. At the end of the season, the top teams go to the Play Offs.
Superleague
1996 saw the inauguration of the new Super League in the UK. This has added excitement and competitiveness to this growing sport. The Superleague consists of eight teams from around the UK.
British National League
In 1982, the British League was formed with three divisions. In an effort to encourage British players, the top fifteen teams were restricted to two imported players each. The top teams broke away in 1996 to form the Superleague and the structure of the British League was reorganised. Currently, there are 10 teams in the British National League.
English/ Scottish Leagues
Each League is divided into a number of divisions starting with a Premier League. The English Ice Hockey Association has administered ice hockey in England since 1983. During that time the number of teams has risen from 60 to 250. There are currently 38 affiliated clubs and more than 7750 licensed players, officials and coaches.
Women's Leagues
Women's Ice Hockey was reorganised in the 1980s with the formation of many new teams. At the present time, the teams are divided into a Premier League and a North and South Division One. An under-19 England team has been formed to play competitive games with the England and Scotland senior teams.
Other Leagues
Within the English and Scottish League structure, there are U19, Junior and Recreational teams . The Under 19 Ice Hockey League was formed in June 1994, replacing the successful under 21 league. The League is split into four divisions : North A, North B, South A and South B. Each team plays the others in their division twice at home and twice away. At Junior level there are leagues for U10s, U12s, U14s and U16s. The Recreation Leagues are divided into Northern, Midland and Southern Sections.
