From Advert to Application

The job advertisement is a key 'document' in the job seeking process as it details the important requirements of the job and of the 'ideal' candidate.

Assessing job advertisements

This requires practice. A job advertisement contains the essential and desirable requirements of a job, but some are 'hidden' in the advert itself. The technique is to be able to pick them out and you will probably find you have got a much longer list than you expected.
  • read the advert very carefully several times.
  • highlight or write down each requirement.
  • list the likely job requirements you think may also apply but are not actually specified.

Matching job requirements and tailoring the application

The task of presenting an application that matches as closely as possible the requirements of the job needs careful thought and planning. An employer will not be able to read between the lines so it is important the application clearly details information about the candidate in a way the employer can understand.

Match your skills and abilities to the job requirements you have identified in any application letters / forms /interviews.

What if the requirements do not match what you have to offer?

It is sometimes tempting to apply for a job that you don't think you are qualified for or don't think you will get. Perhaps though it is worth trying to develop your job search experience or maybe it is worth trying your luck.

Do not be put off if you cannot meet all the requirements; emphasise those you do meet but don't draw attention to those you do not.

Remember

  • that success or constructive feedback from such applications can be very encouraging
  • that attending interviews provides invaluable experience
  • if you sell yourself too well, you may be offered a job you don't really want!

Procedure for job applications using application forms

Finding a job vacancy that is of personal interest normally involves the following procedures:
  • telephoning the company, usually the Personnel Department, to request an application form; it is also a useful opportunity to ask any questions about the company or job. It is prudent to enquire and apply in the New Year as many firms begin their selection from Easter even though the 'trainees' will not start until mid-Summer onwards
  • completion of the company application form completely, following the application instructions - pay attention to neatness and accuracy
  • tailoring the response to the advert or job description
  • providing referees; these are names and addresses, normally of two people (with their permission) whose opinion of your abilities the employer will value and who will vouch for you
  • meeting the closing date; employers will not usually accept late applications
