 | Is Careers Education necessary at this stage? |
Careers Education is a theme that is found in the National Curriculum at all Key Stages and, therefore, it affects all children from the age of 5. However Careers Education in the early stages is about making children aware of the World of Work. |
 | What is meant by the 'World of Work'? |
The world of work includes employment in all its different forms; the type of jobs people do, the skills that are needed, where people work and the reasons why people do the jobs they do. |
 | How do children learn about the World of Work? |
From an early age children notice that adults have different jobs; they recognise uniforms such as a policeman or a nurse. Their experience of work is mostly through the adults around them. They also learn about where, why and how people work, incidentally through the study of National Curriculum topics (see World of Work Case Study). |
 | Do hobbies and interests help to develop skills? |
Joining a group activity or developing a hobby at home can help in all sorts of ways; children learn group skills; their experience of life is broadened; they develop technical skills; they start making decisions for themselves. |
 | How do special needs affect a child's careers education? |
All children are involved in careers activities whether or not they have a physical difficulty, a sensory impairment or a learning difficulty. Learning about the world of work is appropriate for all children. The activities they are involved in will depend on what they are studying or their age, rather than their individual physical or learning capability.
