The University English Scheme offer a range of provision to develop Academic English with Sheffield Hallam University students because “Academic English is no-one’s mother tongue”. We offer a range of free, non-credit modules, and you can find out more about them on the ‘Academic English non-credit modules’ page.

How much does it cost?

Nothing! You can take a weekly UES class or use the Language Advisory Service free of charge if you are an enrolled student at Sheffield Hallam.

When and where are the classes held?

A timetable of classes is published each semester and available on the timetable page, on Blackboard and through Unihub. Most classes are at City Campus in Arundel building, some are online and some at Collegiate campus.

What our students say…

I was educated in Ghana in English from primary school, so I thought going for additional English classes would not be necessary. However, attending the WMD class gave me several useful skills such as ‘being critical’ in academic writing and I am now better at academic referencing and paraphrasing.  I really recommend the UES for all international students. Seth Boateng, MSc Human Resource Management

I am a PhD student from China. The UES is very important and helpful for me as an international student. Tutors are excellent mentors as well as friends, and always willing to offer extra help. I am super happy with my progress and enjoy the whole learning process. Yuan Guo, PhD Early Years Education
