This resource has been developed so you can check that you are able to access a range of the most common media file types that you are likely to encounter during the course.

Microsoft Office

Below are a selection of office files. Click each one and save the file to your computer as prompted, then try opening the file. If you can't open the files please refer to the tip below.

TIP: If you are unable to view the files it may be that you do not have an office suite installed such as Microsoft Office.

For a free alternative to you could try OpenOffice which is an open-source office suite, compatible with other major office suites. It is available to download from the OpenOffice website.

Audio

MP3 is a common audio file that uses digital audio compression to reduce the file size compared to a WAV file. A WAV is an audio file used in Microsoft Windows.

Click the files below to download them, save them to your computer and then open them to play. If you double click the file and are unable to play/hear the audio refer to the tip below.

TIP: If you are unable to hear any sound please check the following:

  • Are your speakers/headphones plugged into the audio jack?
  • Are the speakers turned on?
  • Is the volume on your speakers/headphones turned up ?
  • Is the volume on your computer/device turned up?

PDF

A PDF is a type of document. An advantage is that they can be viewed using free software that allows the user to navigate, search and zoom into the document.

TIP: If you are unable to preview the PDF file you may need to install Adobe Reader from the Adobe website free of charge.

Screen Resolution

You should see this image of a perfect circle.

TIP: If you don't see this as a perfect circle it might be related to your current screen resolution settings. For example, the circle may appear as a rugby ball shape which may mean you have a widescreen monitor which has been set to widescreen resolution, making images appear stretched. You could try adjusting your resolution in your display settings.

Blackboard Collaborate

Blackboard Collaborate is a virtual classroom tool that may be used to deliver some of your seminars, lectures and support sessions online.

Here is an orientation resource designed to introduce you to the basic features.

To access Blackboard Collaborate you will need the most recent version of Java installed. You can download this free of charge from the Java website.

You can also access via the Blackboard Collaborate™ Mobile app on your tablet or mobile device. Once you have installed and opened the app you will be asked to enter the session URL and your name.

Please see below the minimum supported desktop browser versions for accessing PebblePad version 5:

Here's the minimum supported mobile operating system for accessing PebblePad version 5:

  • iOS 7.1 for iPhones and iPads
  • Android 4.2.2
  • Blackberry OS 10
  • Windows 7 for tablets and hybrid devices

Note that for mobile browsers, it is strongly suggested that you use Safari for iOS devices, Chrome for Android devices and Internet Explorer for Windows devices for the best user experience.
