WORKSHOPS, WRITING RETREATS AND SUPPORT (D1 – D3)
We aim to support you in all aspects of beginning, developing and completing your application for fellowship through the practitioner route.
In addition to the advice, guidance and resources provided online on these web pages, we also try to ensure there is plenty of opportunity to receive face-to-face feedback/forward at every stage of your application.
Development Workshops
The best way to understand the requirements of fellowship under the TALENT scheme is to attend one of our development workshops. Dates, times and booking information for these workshops can be found in the TALENT calendar. We normally run two development workshops per month (one for Associate Fellow/Fellow and one for Senior Fellow) which will help you to:
- Answer any questions raised by the introductory videos,
- Enhance your understanding of the PSF 2023 dimensions of practice,
- Interrogate your practice for suitable examples,
- Clarify what kinds of evidence are required,
- Begin to sketch out the shape of your submission,
- Work on identifying some of your evidence and receive feedback.
Our development workshops are delivered online. If this does not suit your needs, please don’t hesitate to contact us on talent@shu.ac.uk to discuss alternative options.

Registration
Attendance at a Development Workshop automatically registers you with the TALENT scheme and gives you up to a year to submit your fellowship application. You will be advised of your own personal submission deadline date (more details about submission deadlines can be found on the TALENT calendar. If after attending the Development Workshop you feel that you are not ready to commit to submitting within this time period, you may opt out at this stage. By registering, you are eligible to attend as many writing retreats as you wish, to receive further support with your application.
Please note: If you are unable to submit by your own personal submission deadline date, we would require you to begin the registration process again by attending a new Development Workshop and repeating any practice observation within your new registration/submission period.
Writing Retreats
Our full day writing retreats are delivered online and in person.
Our online writing retreats allow you to work remotely and focus on the ongoing development of your fellowship application. One-to-one guidance and support are available online or by email on any aspect of your draft application – it could be a discussion about relevant content based on rough bullet points or feedback on a fully completed draft. If workloads do not permit a full day, then you can block out time for just a morning or afternoon or arrange a specific appointment time.
Our on-campus writing retreats provide a quiet space to focus on the ongoing development of your fellowship application, along with paper-based resources. In person guidance and support is available on any aspect of your draft application. If workloads do not permit a full day, then come for just a morning or afternoon. Please note that you will need to bring your own laptop.
You may book onto as many online/on-campus writing retreats as you feel you need. By blocking out time away from e-mail, meetings and other daily distractions, you can make some real progress!
These retreats run 1-2 times per month. Further details regarding specific dates and how to book a place, can be found via the TALENT calendar or by contacting talent@shu.ac.uk
To book on to a Writing Retreat you must have attended a Development Workshop within the last 12 months and registered for the TALENT scheme.
Peer Mentoring Scheme for Fellowship Applicants (D1 – 3)
We have a mentoring option for those who would like to benefit from support, guidance and advice from colleagues who have already succeeded in obtaining recognition through the TALENT Advance HE Fellowship Scheme. Mentoring is available for staff applying for Associate Fellow (D1) , Fellow (D2) and Senior Fellow (D3).
Mentoring for Principal Fellow (D4) is organised separately – details can be found on the Principal Fellow page.
This support offer is optional and in no way affects access to the ongoing support offer from the TALENT team.
For more details on how the scheme operates, please read the mentor scheme guide for applicants.
Whilst mentors undertake initial and ongoing PSF 2023 relating training to effectively support mentees, please be aware and respect that they are doing this work in their own time. Please do take the time, when you first meet with your mentor, to agree what kind of support you would like and what the limitations are, including when might be the best times to engage.
You may select and make contact with any available TALENT scheme mentor and can therefore choose to meet someone close to your own discipline or select someone who might have a wholly different set of practice and experience to draw on. Alternatively, you can ask the TALENT team to allocate a mentor and arrange an initial meeting.
Please do not put your mentor in a difficult position by asking their opinion on whether you are likely to pass or not.
In order to evaluate the effectiveness of this scheme, we will ask you to complete an evaluation form once you have submitted your fellowship application and we will record details of the type and volume of support provided by your mentor. This information will not be available to reviewers or used in the reviewing of your submission.
Please contact talent@shu.ac.uk for the current mentor list.
