Section 8: Legal Issues

Most of us are familiar with copyright issues in reproducing documents and other materials for learner support, however the electronic environment attracts a host of potential 'minefields' in the area of copyright and intellectual property.

At its simplest level, electronic materials are subject to the same copyright provisions as any 'hardcopy' material we may wish to use.   Many web users seem to think   that the ease of downloading from the Internet means these materials may be used freely.   This is NOT the case.   Web based materials may be free of charge to access, but not necessarily to reuse.   As with other intellectual property, text, images and sounds have been authored, and therefore require permission before they may be reused.

In this section you will find insights into some of the legal issues surrounding the Internet, but be aware that this is a constanly changing area of law, and this is only a starting point, not a comprehensive set of guidelines.

Once you have   taken a look at the materials in this section it would be worth examining any electronic materials you have produced, or are or might be producing, and see what legal implications might be present.
