Spontaneous combustion - Krook has disappeared - because he drank too much?Alcohol was thought to have characteristics of 'fire'. Thomas Trotter's work on drunkenness at the beginning of the nineteenth century spends quite a few pages considering whether spontaneous combustion exists.

 

 

The Dedlock Arms Chesney Wold. The village is based on Rockingham and Dedlock's place on Rockingham Castle, which would make The Dedlock Arms 'Sonde's Arms'. Extant?

The Red Lion (Unnamed) The only hostelry of real note in the novel. Also used in Oliver Twist. Extant.

Sol's Arms Based on the Old Ship Tavern, Chicester Rents corner, off Chancery Lane. Defunct.

The White Horse Cellar Piccadilly. Guppy meets Esther here, and later reminds her of the meeting. Also mentioned in Pickwick Papers. Defunct. (Details)
