Interesting Adjectives

Grammar BugGrammar Bug. 'An adjective is a word used to describe a noun. It came before or after the noun; e.g. the alien was blue / the blue alien.'

Adjectives make your writing interesting. Look at the difference an adjective can make:

Alex wore a jacket.
Alex wore a brown jacket.
Alex wore an old, brown jacket
Alex wore an old, brown, baggy jacket
The adjectives give you a picture of Alex wearing a jacket. The picture changes as you add more adjectives. It becomes more interesting.

Here are some adjectives. Use some of them to make these sentences more interesting. (or you can use some adjectives of your own).

hot   silver   red   multicoloured     smooth

bright     shimmering     shooting     blue

The ________________ spaceship landed quietly.
He looked out of the window and saw a _________________ star.
Mars is a __________________ planet.
Saturn has _________________ rings.

The adjectives in these sentences are not very interesting. Can you think of a better word or words to use? (The adjectives are underlined so you can recognise them easily).

The astronaut has a nice view from the spaceship window.
