A Thesaurus is a book of words
And stacks of phrases too,
When you want a different word
This book's the one for you!
Instead of putting 'good' or 'nice'
Try 'delicious', or 'dazzling' or 'great',
And 'tardy', and 'behind the clock'
Sounds better than merely 'late'.
A Thesaurus has the alternatives
But start with the index first
Find the words that you want to improve
And make them better, not worse!
Check the meanings, try words out -
If need be ask advice.
With practice, your writing can improve,
Be admirable, commendable and 'nice'!
A Thesaurus is a book of words and phrases.
It puts words and phrases into groups.
Words and phrases that have the same or a similar meaning are put into the same group.
For example, a Thesaurus might group these words and phrases together:
touch make contact graze scrape meet
collide operate tap pat run the hand over
A Thesaurus can help you improve your writing by suggesting more interesting words and phrases that you can use, but remember the words in a Thesaurus are not arranged in alphabetical order.
To find a word with a similar meaning, you must:
- look in the index for your word
- make a note of the page or section number next to the word
- find that page or number in the book
- look through the choices and decide which word or group of words you want to use
