School Concert Goes with a Bang!

Last night's concert at St. Monks Primary School, certainly went with a bang. The children were performing 'The Wizard of Oz' and had just reached the final scene with the Great Wiz himself, when disaster struck.

Mr Rocket, a local firework supplier, had been called in to help with an indoor firework display. The fireworks were to be let off as the Wizard left the stage for the last time.

All had gone well until that point. Dorothy, played by Emily Allbright has sung beautifully. Darren Rust was excellent as the Tin Man, Tom Straw, as the Scarecrow, made us laugh and Philip Main was charming as the lion.

A corner of the stage was cleared as Mr Rocket prepared to launch the display. There were whizzes and cracks and a rainbow of colours but the final firework was one bang too far.

As Mr Rocket stepped to the edge of the stage to light it, he tripped over a cable and suddenly the hall was plunged into darkness. Luckily, Mrs Kees, the caretaker was standing by with a torch and within a few minutes she had the stage lights back on again.
