Q. I have a jar of old coins that my grandmother gave me so I though about starting a collection. Where can I find some information on how to organise my collection? A. You are lucky to have a selection of coins to get you started but they need storing properly. This information site will give you an introduction to the hobby of coin collecting. Q. I have some old foreign bank notes. What's the best way to store them? A. You can buy special bank note albums. These are wallets with plastic inserts that are divided into sections. You can view the front and back of your notes easily without having to handle them. See Getting Started |

Q. How should I handle my coins? A. Handle them by the edge, try not to touch the face of the coin. If you use tweezers make sure they are plastic coated. See Section Getting Started |

Q. I have started to collect some coins with tree designs and some with ships. Is this a good way to start a collection? A. Many people have collections that follow a particular theme. Q. What information should I find on a coin? A. The date and country of issue and possibly a mint mark showing where it was minted. See About coins. |

Q. Where can I buy more coins to add to my collection? A. Old coins can be bought from dealers either personally or by post. You will also find coins for sale at Antique or Collectors' Fairs. New coins and uncirculated coins can be bought from the Royal Mint. See Sources of information. |

Q. Is it better to collect coins or notes? A. You can collect both but it is really a matter of what you prefer and what you can afford to collect. Coins are more hard wearing because they are made of stronger material but providing you handle and store notes carefully you should have no problem. |
