Welcome to Climbing

pic2Until the last few years, climbing was regarded as an unconventional, minority sport restricted to a few dedicated climbers and mountaineers. Nowadays it is a popular participation sport for people of all ages. However, with this increase in popularity different areas within the sport have developed to cater for different abilities and interests.

At one end of the scale are the experienced professionals. Some of these are working towards, or are actively involved, in expeditions. This type of climbing calls for a wide range of skills including some alpine climbing on snow and ice. It requires a full-time commitment and a great deal of preparation. For those of you who want to enjoy climbing in your spare time there are several alternatives. You could, for example, choose outdoor crag climbing, a sport enjoyed by many 'weekend' climbers or indoor wall climbing to learn or practise some basic skills while your confidence grows.

If you are keen to climb, the basic information found in these pages may give you some ideas, but the only way to learn is to go and climb with an experienced climber.
