There are four Halls of Residence - two at Perry Bar, one in the city centre and one at Edgbaston. The university also has some houses and flats that it leases to students. It is not possible to guarantee a place for everyone, but where necessary, the university helps students to find private, rented accommodation.

Birmingham, one of Britain's largest cities, is a busy, lively centre with theatres, concert halls, international sport and music venues, restaurants and shops. There is something to suit everyone's taste. Birmingham has its own Chinatown and is famous as being the British capital of the 'Balti'. All the university sites are within a short travelling distance of the city centre, and each is located in a busy suburb with plenty of local shops and eating places.

Various music venues offer a wide range of music, attracting local, and international artists. Smaller venues: The Foundry and The Sanctuary and Ronnie Scotts (Jazz). Larger venues: Symphony Hall (classical); the NEC (multipurpose) and Aston Villa Leisure Centre. There are a number of theatres, including the Hippodrome and The Birmingham Rep, and a range of multiplex cinemas. Among the many other attractions are a variety of museums, galleries, cultural and heritage centres. At the university, social events with live bands and discos are arranged through the Students' Union at Perry Bar and Edgbaston.

Sports facilities in Birmingham provide for ice skating, ten pin bowling, skiing, swimming, cricket and a host of other sports. There is a Snowdome at Tamworth and a popular water sports centre at Edgbaston Reservoir. The university has more than 30 sporting clubs to cater for most interests.

Sports to watch locally include football (Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Coventry, West Brom), cricket (test and county matches at Edgbaston), rugby (Moseley), international golf (the Belfry), basketball (Birmingham Bullets at the NEC) plus a range of other national and international sports (at the National Indoor Arena and the NEC). The TV programme 'Gladiators' is recorded at the Arena.

There's excellent shopping in the city centre with department stores, small specialist shops and shopping malls. Open air markets are held in the city centre around the Bull Ring and in many of the suburbs.

There are 10 libraries split between the seven sites. Libraries support the teaching carried out at that site. The main library, the Kenrick, is at Perry Bar.

Some data networks are available and these are being extended to improve on-line access for students.

Almost 10,000 students attend the university on a part-time basis and most courses at the university have a vocational as well as an academic base.
