Leeds is a lively student city with lots of pubs, clubs and restaurants. It is noted for its 'good beer' and is the home of Brewery Wharf, a popular tourist attraction. Around the city centre are lots of open, 'green' areas that make Leeds an attractive regional centre.

Leeds is often called the 'all-night' city because of its popular music and dance venues. There are also theatres (The Grand and the West Yorkshire Playhouse) and a number of cinemas. The many music venues offer a range of music - folk, traditional, classical, jazz, reggae or rock, that attract local and international artists. (venues include Students Union, Roundhay Park for large events, and various pubs). Leeds Met Student Union is popular for Indie touring bands.

Local sporting facilities in the city include an international swimming and diving centre. At the university, Beckett Park is well known for its superb sporting facilities with top quality playing fields, courts and athletics tracks. It has the Regional Gymnastics Centre that combines a large gymnasium with an extensive sports hall, both with the latest equipment. The centre provides a venue for national and international training. Within easy reach of Leeds are the Pennines for walking or climbing.

Sports to watch include football (Leeds United), cricket (Yorkshire and England at Headingley), and rugby (Leeds Rhinos).

There is excellent shopping in the city centre and large out of town shopping mall (The White Rose Centre). Open air markets are popular in the city.

Library and computing facilities are provided in Learning Centres based on both of the University's campuses at Beckett Park and Calverley Street. A new £4.5 million Learning Centre has been built within the James Graham Building on the University's Beckett Park Campus.

The academic year is divided into 2 15-week semesters. Each semester is a 12 week teaching period followed by 3 weeks assessment. Vacation times are as normal. Courses are modular.

Roughly 50% of students study part-time and many follow programmes linked to their professional work within the region.
