Both Shrivenham and Silsoe are rural villages. Neither are the conventional student locations. Social and sports activities are mostly provided through the university. Sports facilities at Shrivenham include a golf course, outdoor heated pool, and riding stables. Various expeditions to other countries are arranged in the summer.

Luton (to the south) or Bedford (to the north) are larger towns with more amenities, reasonably close to Silsoe. Swindon has additional amenities eight miles from Shrivenham.
