Why drink?
Doctors agree that an occasional drink does little harm to a person's health. Most people drink -
- To be sociable with friends
- For enjoyment/ relaxation
- To celebrate a special occasion
Risks
Excessive drinking can lead to
- alcoholism (drinking is no longer a pleasure but a necessity)
- an increased risk of high blood pressure, overweight, strokes, some types of cancer, stomach upsets, poor sleeping, hangovers and liver disease
Drinking can also affect your ability to concentrate, resulting in accidents
- at home
- or problems at work
- on the road
Quitting
First you must accept you have a drink problem, then you can
- Deal with the reasons for your drinking (seek counselling if necessary)
- Cut out the drink itself
- Ask friends and family for moral support
Getting help
You can get advice from your GP
Alcoholics' Anonymous, is an organisation that can help if you are dependent on drink. Most towns have a local branch.
