Biography
Blur’s first single ‘She’s So High’ was released in 1990, but the story of the band goes back to around 1980. Damon Albarn moved from London to Colchester where he met Graham Coxon at Stanway Comprehensive School. Both boys had musical talents - Damon studied music and drama while Graham was beginning to learn guitar and played some saxophone.
Damon and Graham's friendship and musical interests grew. In the late 80’s, Dave Rowntree and Alex James joined them to form the band Seymour. Colchester-born Dave played drums and bagpipes! Alex, who first met Graham while studying at Goldsmith’s college in London, played bass guitar.
After playing a few shows in and around London, they renamed the band Blur in 1989. In 1991 they recorded their first big hit, ‘There’s No Other Way’ with producer Stephen Street, who has been fully involved with their work and world-wide success ever since.
Blur’s music has been described as ‘fresh’, ‘witty’, ‘explosive’, ‘ingenious’, ‘slightly out of control’ and ‘constantly changing’. With a string of hits and top albums, including ‘Leisure’, ‘Modern Life is Rubbish’, ‘Parklife’ and ‘The Great Escape’, their music is certainly successful. A new album ‘Blur’, with yet another new approach, is eagerly awaited by all their fans! |
