Battling Vikings and longship races are among the regular highlights of the Jorvik festival, now celebrating its 13th year. New for 1998 is the Viking Trial of Strength with displays of endurance Viking-style.
Throughout the week, there is an opportunity to taste Scandinavian food, listen to traditional folk songs and hymns, and dance to traditional Celtic music. Alternatively, you can try some arm or leg wrestling, cheer the crews in the longship races, watch the Vikings wage war on the Saxons at the Battle of Brunanburh or marvel at the boat burning ceremony and the firework finale.
All the events take place in and around the city of York and are organised and funded by the Jorvik Viking Centre.
