Name

Blackamoor. (NB. The area was originally known simply as Blacka' but this name has gone out of general usage).

Status

Site of Scientific Interest (SSI), proposed Local Nature Reserve (Proposed LNR) and listed on the Invertebrate Site Register.

181 ha (approximately 448 acres)

Location

South-west of Sheffield, and immediately south of the Hathersage Road (A625), in the Peak District National Park. Adjoins pasture on its eastern side, beyond which lies the Sheffield suburb of Totley. Go to location map.

Boundaries

With the exception of the A625 at its northern end, the boundary mostly follows field margins (Figure 1).

Land Tenure

Owned by Sheffield City Council. Acquired in 1933 on behalf of the City by the J.G. Graves Trust (for acquisition history see Anderson, 1984).

Management responsibility

Recreation Department, Sheffield City Council, Brook Road, Meersbrook Park, Sheffield, S8 (with advice from the Moorlands and Woodlands Advisory Group).

Statutory responsibility

Planning authorities Sheffield City Council (SCC), Peak Park Joint Planning Board.

Legal obligations

SCC have a legal duty under the terms of the conveyance "...to preserve the moor in its natural state and to prevent any alteration to its present character by building operations or any other form of interference". The conveyance further states that public access be assured: "...with such pathways to be provided in accord with the character of the estate as will make the moor accessible to all who desire to visit it for health-giving exercise and pleasure".

Blackamoor lies within the Sheffield Green Belt and as such is subject to the usual planning constraints for sites of this nature. The site is also protected in the Sheffield Unitary Development Plan as an area of Natural History Interest, and falls within the planning remit of the Peak Park Joint Planning Board. It is therefore, subject to the relevant planning policies for the peak District National Park.
